How to Vacay with a Toddler (Part I)

While I may not have learned how to fight off my toddler in public (see that story here), I did successfully vacation with one. Trust me, no one is as surprised at this than I.

Back in the fall, J & I toyed with the idea of taking a long weekend adventure to Gatlinburg. Trying to plan this before the holidays and during football season was near impossible so we made the decision to take a weeklong beach trip instead. While I was thrilled to plan a trip (it had been three years since our last vacation), I had some anxiety about the level of R&R that would be achieved taking E since no family or friends would be around. It takes a village, people.

I am pleased to report that our family vacation was a roaring success! We had a wonderful time in the sun and sand for seven glorious days. Packing and planning for a toddler friendly trip can be overwhelming so I put together a list to lend you a hand. If you want to learn more about any of the items listed below, click on the image and it will take you to the appropriate retailer’s site.

 1. Bring a DVD Player

Nothing will bring you closer to the brink of insanity than driving with an unhappy, screaming child. Take a leap and purchase a portable DVD player, if your car does not already have one. We purchased a refurbished one off Amazon and it has been a lifesaver. Headphones were purchased before this trip, but unfortunately E was not a fan. Be sure to bring a variety of movies and shows to entertain the littles. You can use them in the car and have a family movie night during your stay. Since we do not have a large collection of DVDs, I borrowed some from my sweet friends. #caringissharing

 2. Spray Sunscreen

Contrary from my sorority days of holding the “Tanning Bed Goddess” title, I now bathe in sunscreen. The sun is brutal and skin cancer is real. So are wrinkles. Keeping these things in mind, I cover my very fair skinned child in sunscreen. The Honest Company has had some negative PR regarding their sunscreen, but it has never failed us. In fact, E was the only one who did not burn. We used a mixture of the Honest Company and Babyganics brands since I am semi crunchy when it comes to my baby. Prior to leaving the house we lathered her in 50 SPF lotion and used the face stick. On the beach, we used spray sunscreen. The spray is much easier to use since applying sunscreen on a toddler should be considered an Olympic sport. Both brands are mineral based and go on white, which is nice in my opinion because you can ensure that all areas are covered. As always, make sure you read the directions for how often you need to apply and make sure you always use it after swimming. Always.

3. New Toys are a Must

This far into the parenting game you know that entertainment is key to enjoyable outings with a small child. Even when your firstborn has never experienced waves or having her feet in the sand, toys remain a necessity. Vacations are supposed to be fun so splurge on a set of new toys. I purchased these for under $20 and the ROI (return on investment) was well worth it. My two-and-a-half-year-old spent all day playing with these on the beach and they come in a clear, plastic bag that she could carry. #winning

4. Rent, Rent, Rent

We debated spending money on items we could bring ourselves such as sleeping arrangements for E (yes, she still sleeps in a crib #sorrynotsorry) and chairs for the beach. The property management company we used for lodging suggested contacting Crib Connection, a business where you can rent equipment like a crib, highchair, etc. Genius! Plus, the price includes delivery and pick up so you don’t worry about a thing. We rented a crib for the week instead of loading up our pack ‘n play and I would do it again, every time. Additionally, we received a discount since our management company was a preferred partner.

One of our more expensive purchases was utilize the beach chair company on our resort. Each day they set up two chairs and a giant umbrella right in front of the ocean. This was ideal as we did not have to fight for space on the beach and had a prime location where E could play. Since we had enough items to carry it was wonderful to have three less things to lug.  The umbrella provided shade from the sun and E even napped in the chair one day.

5. Buy Baby Powder

A few times before our vacation arrived, I asked the Facebook faithful what beach items were a must for traveling with a toddler. Many people suggested baby powder, claiming that it was miracle substance when sand was involved. It turns out they were right. Rub some powder on that sandy body and it comes off – a perfect prep prior to reapplying sunscreen! Do yourself a favor and throw a large container of it in your suitcase. You’ll thank me later!

Hopefully some of these suggestions will prove beneficial as you plan a fingers crossed relaxing holiday.

Do you have anything to add to the list? Please share as we have already booked our next beach trip!

Oprah Who? My Favorite Things....For Now

I adore mascara and at the same time I loathe it. If I could afford it I would pay for eyelash extensions. I hate my eyelashes and envy those who have long, curled lashes. Sigh. However, Falsies Mascara is the CLOSEST thing I have found to make me happy. Just the black kind - NOT waterproof.

I love the light for my Kindle. I can read at bedtime without keeping J up. Plus it reminds me of a coal miner for some reason, which puts me in a Hunger Games mode. "And may the odds be ever in your favor."

The Run Keeper App. I adore it. You can plug in your workout or use the GPS to track your workout. It will talk to you throughout the work out every 5 minutes with your distance, speed, MPH, and how far you are from your goal speed (only in GPS mode). It's kind of awesome.

Sweaty Bands. A work out headband that does NOT budge. I swear, it does not move at all during a workout. Plus, they have ADORABLE styles. Very fun girly ones, team ones, sorority ones, etc. I am adding this one to my wishlist for very obvious WDE reasons. Check out Sweaty Bands. Better yet, buy me one.

If my life depended on ironing then I would perish. Instead of ironing I use this fabulous wrinkle releaser spray on my clothes. Each night I pick out my work outfit and spray it down with this. The clothing can then be thrown in the dryer, but I usually just straighten it myself. It's amazing and works wonders. No wrinkly clothes and no ironing for me!

When Good Food Goes Bad....

I was performing my morning routine of browsing the daily news stories on AOL when I came across an article about how long to keep leftovers in the fridge. Yes, this means that you actually throw away food based on the shelf life, not that you take a whiff and decide it's edible for a few more days. AOL linked over to Hellawella where I stumbled across this fabulous guide:

Even though some foods have expiration dates, this is useful for the dates that fade or the items that do not have a date.

My House The Canvas

Artsy craft skills are something that I completely lack. It was a miracle that I kept my job with the girls scouts. My bestest friend for years upon years happens to be one of the most talented people I know and she is very chill which is a great balance for our relationship. Ha! P was so artsy that she would use paint pens to decorate her shoes during our time at a very rule abiding private school. Loopholes my friends. Once she decided to paint every wall in her room a different color. We then proceeded to decorate the wall with quotes, autographs, etc. Bless her parents.

P has started a blog about that will have DIY ideas and showcase her talents as well. She also has started a business. You can rent her for parties. If you have ever been to a Sip 'N Strokes place or somewhere the girls go to drink wine and paint a canvas for a few hours, well this is what she does. She will travel to YOU and bring the supplies. A great idea for any type of girlie party. P is in the Atlanta area so if you are interested in doing this for girls nights, alum events, etc. you should contact her.

Visit her blog to see how creative she is at My House The Canvas.

How To: Transport A Crock Pot

Have you ever tried to transport a crock pot by yourself in the car?

My friend DJ is obsessed with her car. I'm pretty sure her feelings towards her car rival the feelings a mother has for their child. It is THAT serious.

She drives a nice sports car that was recently under attack by the contents of a crock pot. She was headed to my home with her squash soup in tow for the premier meeting of HHBC, when the idiocy of Columbus drivers caused her to slam on the brakes. The crock pot could not handle it.

The food found it's way onto the purse, the seat, and the floor board of the car. It was a hot mess and DJ had a breakdown. A few days a little too late, she discovered how to successfully take a crock pot in the car.

The trick? Use rubber bands to secure the lid on the crock pot.

So simple. So effective.

I have followed this advice on a couple of occasions and have had great results - yummy food and a clean car.

I still place the pot in a box or wrap a towel around it just in case it happens to tip over.

Maybe this was something you already knew, but I was fascinated with the idea. Safe travels!

Is There A Song About Boobies?

I wonder if this title means that you cannot access my blog from a computer that has any kind of parenting or business monitoring on it. Oops so sorry!

Weird, weird, title. I know. But I think it is very important to share with you one of the best things I have ever used. I cannot remember who recommended this site to me, but they used the site after watching a rave review of this company on Oprah.

www.enell.com

This company sells the most amazing sports bras in the world, well at least in my world. Are you laughing because I am currently blogging about a stupid sports bra? Well don't. It has changed my life. Okay now that I am being dramatic let me tell you about this bra. It has so much support for any size chest (especially great support for those who need it). I mean it is amazing.
It is tight yet comfortable. It has about 20 or so clasps that connect on the front and is composed of spandex and nylon. It is extremely durable and machine washable. Their customer service has been great each time I have ordered one and if you order a pink one online, 10% of their profits go to FORCE - an organization created to help those affected by cancer.

Anyways,  I just ordered another one and wanted to share this site with those who may need that support! Hehe. Seriously, these are not the cheapest undergarments, but it is well worth the price.

The site offers every day bras and tees, but I only use the sport one. And if you get one and say you heard about it from me, maybe I will get a free one or Oprah can interview me about it the same day Britney or Cam Newton is on her show.....Okay I'm done.

"Get Your Freak On"

The hubby is taking over my blog.

He is selling a fabulous softball bat that is not allowed in his league, ASA. Please pass this great deal along to any friends, son, hubbies, etc. that like to play softball.  Please click the link below for more detailed information as it would be a great less expensive gift for a softball player.

And The Oscar Goes To....

I have such original titles.

First of all, my cook book review for Rachel Ray is up and listed below. I was nervous to try her ideas. I registered for some of her cookbooks for my wedding, but had hardly used them. Rachel frightens me, but I did enjoy her recipes (for the most part).

This week I will be cooking from my ALL TIME favorite cookbook. It was the first one I started cooking with and I picked out new recipes to play with from it.
Yes you are seeing the picture clearly - it's an AUBURN cookbook! I think there was a contest for sororities to earn spirit points by submitting recipes for this cookbook - anyways, I absolutely love it. There are so many recipes and subjects to choose from. If I could still purchase it I swear I would buy it for anyone getting married or anyone in need of a cookbook.

Okay back to the title of the post. Did anyone watch the Oscars? I typically don't get into this award show - I had it on in the background while I updated the blog last night. What I do love though is the red carpet coverage. Yup, it's all about the dresses for me! So with that being said, I present to you the outfits I adore and loathe.

I just wanted to show you how AMAZING J Hudson looks. Weight Watchers works.

ADORE:

I loved everything about this dress. I want it.

You either love it or hate it. She reminds me of a lady I would see on a stamp, but I liked it.

I think I have a thing for feathers now. I am not a Swank fan, but I liked this dress.

Mila has been killing it since Black Swan came out. The cut of the dress was almost to low, but she pulled it off.

Love the color. I am almost over Natalie because of all the Black Swan attention, but this has been my fav pregnant dress to date.

Once again I love the color. It's different.

LOATHE:

It reminded me of water. I don't know why. She has the body to wear it, but I found it boring.

I saw a comment on FB about how this looks like a bedspread and I agree 100%.

I wish she had worn more color. It falls flat for me.

I know you all were dying for my opinion. Who am I to judge? I have lived in gym clothes for the past few weeks!

"And I Need A Vacation Tonight"

Without further delay, the upcoming recipes for this week will be from

I registered for so many Rachel Ray cookbooks when I got married. The truth of the matter is that the book seemed very detailed and didn't sound too appealing once I dove into it (that was 3 years ago before I enjoyed forced myself to love cooking). I finally have decided to tackle a few recipes *years later* and I look forward to the challenge!

I picked 3 meals with 3 sides from this book.
This should get interesting.

"Would You Hold It Against Me?"

Obviously there is more coming from that title.

Until then, please read below for many ratings about new recipes and sides from:

So many yummy choices for you to try for dinners, parties, your family, etc.

Any new recipe challenges? I would love a new cook book to dive into! Please?

Weekly Challenge

Since I am a stay at home wife and have more time on my hands than most, I am going to have my menus planned a week at a time with recipes from the cookbook of that week.  I will give you my thoughts on the recipes and if they are lucky enough to end up in my recipe box. :) At least 3 meals must be from the book of the week - each meal needs 1 main entree and 2 sides (a dessert can be a side).
This Week's Cookbook is drum roll please

I bought this cookbook before I started watching the show......I mean  i bought it years ago and I just now started watching the show - which I have become obsessed with. This will be a fun one to use for this week. I run my 5K this Saturday so I am trying not to heat too unhealthy and my husband typically doesn't like "healthy" foods so I can give you honest feedback.

Check back on Thursdays/Fridays for the recipes and reviews. I'll also post the cookbook for the next week so if you have any suggestions on a cookbook for me to use, please leave a comment (you must be a follower of this blog before I can accept the challenge)! I'll even take suggestions for meals  - they don't have to be healthy ideas although those are nice for everyone who is still sticking to their New Years resolution.

I think this will be fun and something different for me to do. I had forgotten some of these cookbooks that I even had. Please send some followers my way if you think of anyone who might enjoy this challenge!

If I Was Employed, I Would Buy This......

I have been meaning to post something about this for a while, but two years ago I got these great gifts for my parents - particularly for their computers. It's called a Korner Keeper and you can get them here.

They fit around your monitor and are great for decorating your office. Plus, for ONLY $20 they are very affordable. I printed out pictures and made them for my family, but I would love to make one for myself......if I had a job. Yay for moving!

"It's Christmas Time In The City."

Most of my Christmas presents have been bought online in years past and since we are planning for a cross-country move in the next few weeks, online shopping has become my passion for the moment.

My sister (C) recently got married (we will call them C & R - stay tuned for another blog update) and they have decided to use the Dave Ramsey budget to start off their little life together. I recently purchased a cute little wedding gift for them that happened to go along with their Dave Ramsey ideals. Dave is all about using cash and using no more that what has been allotted to that category, but who wants to carry around ugly, beat up envelopes to stay in budget? Not I. While adventuring off in the blog world I came across this:

Perfect! Cute envelopes that won't get destroyed and they can be carried around to help you stay on budget. C (like myself) does not carry around cash so this will definitely be new to her. If you are interested in these for yourself or for others, please check out the shop on Etsy. She has many designs to pick from and you get to pick your own categories. Fabulous.

Empress Stationery - GET EXCITED!

My little sister (yes blood related, not sorority) is getting married in November. Even though I am 1,000 miles away, I wanted to throw her bachelorette party. Thanks to facebook, I saw that one of my sorority sisters started her own stationary business. Please check out her blog, Empress Stationery. I have fallen in love with pretty much everything she has designed and I wanted to share it will yall. She can do an invitation for almost any event!  I just sent out the invitations for the bachelorette party and have received such great feedback on how cute they are! I think I have become one of those people who believes that the actual tone of the event begins with that first invite. Even though it's only a piece of paper, it speaks volumes on what type of event it will be. Maybe that's just my imagination though. :) I am back in talks with Ms. Empress Staionery about a second project - baby shower invitations! I highly recommend using her if you need invitiations for anything. Enjoy!

Where's All My Soul Sisters?

Lady Marmalade (#13 in 2001). Oh how I loved that song. The only thing missing was Britney.

First, I absolutely love the app with the Top 100 Songs by Bing. It was FREE (It still says it's free for a limited time - whatever that means). Regardless, I heart it. You choose a year and it will randomly play the songs from that year. So many memories from high school, college, etc. It's great.

Secondly, Barnes & Noble is having a huge summer sale. Tons of books are on sale (paperback, hardback, eBooks, etc.) If you purchase over $25 you receive free shipping. There is so much to chose from. Even the hardback books are significantly reduced. My husband decided to spend money on fireworks so I spent money on books. I'm such a nerd.

Lastly, Cow Appreciation Day is on July 9th at Chick Fil A. So, if you feel like dressing up like a cow you will receive a free combo meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner - your choice). I also believe you can partially dress in cow attire and you will still receive a free entree at the discretion of the manager. Moo.
